Georgia House Passes Legislation Giving Georgians More Options for Health Insurance

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives passed House Bill 1184 on Friday, March 26, 2010, by a vote of 108 to 55.  Sponsored by Representative Matt Ramsey (R-Peachtree City), HB 1184 allows Georgians to purchase individual health insurance plans across state lines.

“HB 1184 will help reduce the number of uninsured Georgians, as well as offer more choices and competition in the individual market,” said Representative Ramsey. “This legislation offers a free market alternative to the federal healthcare bill.”

HB 1184 authorizes insurance companies to offer individual accident and sickness insurance policies in Georgia that have been approved for issuance in other states.  Policies will be regulated by Georgia’s insurance commissioner.

“This legislation would allow Georgians to have additional options for health coverage, options that can be more tailored to the particular needs of each citizen and their family,” added Representative Ramsey.
