ATLANTA –The Georgia House of Representatives welcomed Elana Meyers, Georgia’s only athlete to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, to the House Chamber on Monday. Meyers was invited by the Douglas County Delegation who introduced House Resolution 1896, commending her for earning a bronze medal at her first Olympic appearance in the bobsled competition on February 24, 2010.
“I want to congratulate Elana for bringing an Olympic medal back to the United States,” said Representative Bill Hembree (R-Winston). “She has brought pride to her home state of Georgia, as well as the rest of the country.”
Meyers is a resident of Douglasville, Georgia, and is the daughter of former Atlanta Falcon, Edward Meyers. She graduated in 2002 from Lithia Springs High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from George Washington University (GWU). While at GWU, she led the Colonials to their first ever Atlantic 10 Tournament and earned a position on the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I softball All-Star team. Following college, she joined the Mid-Michigan Ice, a professional softball team in Midland, Michigan. While there, she began bobsledding in 2007 and made the national team in her rookie season.
Other accomplishments by Meyers include winning a bronze medal at the World Cup competition in 2008, a gold medal at the inaugural World Cup in Whistler, Canada, in 2009 and a silver medal at the 2009 FIBT (Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing) World Championship in New York. In January, Myers was named to the United States Women’s Bobsled Team for the 2010 Winter Olympics, then went on to capture the bronze medal in February.
