ATLANTA— House Speaker David Ralston announced today the appointment of Rep. Katie Dempsey (R-Rome) to the Special Joint Committee on Immigration Reform.
“The creation of this joint committee was inspired by the federal government’s continued failure to deal with the problem of illegal immigration and its drain on taxpayer resources in Georgia,” said House Speaker David Ralston. “I know Rep. Dempsey will look at every legislative solution available to the General Assembly that picks up where Washington D.C. has let us down.”
The joint committee will work to draft legislation that stems the flow of illegal immigration activity in Georgia. The 14-member joint committee is made up of seven state Representatives appointed by Speaker Ralston and seven state Senators named by Lieutenant Governor Cagle.
“I am honored that Speaker Ralston appointed me to this committee,” said Rep. Dempsey. “While immigration reform is in desperate need of a federal solution, I am committed to exploring any effort we can make on the state level to ensure that our limited taxpayer resources go to benefit only the legal residents of our state.”
Speaker Ralston also named to the joint committee State Representatives David Casas (R-Lilburn), Rick Austin (R-Demorest), Michael Harden (R-Toccoa), Greg Morris (R- Vidalia), Matt Ramsey (R-Peachtree City) and Stephen Allison (R-Blairsville).
