Rep. Edward Lindsey Comments on Interim Superintendent for Atlanta Public Schools

ATLANTA – State Representative Edward Lindsey (R-Atlanta) today released the following statement regarding the Atlanta School Board’s decision to hire Erroll Davis, the current University System of Georgia chancellor, as the interim superintendent for Atlanta Public Schools:

“I would like to applaud the quick action taken by the Atlanta Public School board in their selection of Chancellor Erroll Davis to fill the role of interim superintendent. This is the type of decisive action that is necessary to get Atlanta’s public schools back on the right track for its students.

“My time as a north Atlanta state representative has allowed me the opportunity to observe closely Chancellor Davis. I have seen his dedication to students and his governance of academic institutions. We all know how important receiving a higher education diploma is for our young people, and Chancellor Davis’ success with our state university system makes him uniquely qualified to lead Atlanta’s public schools. I believe he will bring a new perspective in guiding Atlanta’s schools, educating its children, and achieving new levels of academic achievement.”

Davis will replace outgoing Superintendent Beverly Hall. He will begin his term as interim superintendent on July 1, the day after he retires from the university system, and continue to serve until the Atlanta School Board hires a permanent superintendent.

Representative Edward Lindsey was elected by the Republican Caucus as their Majority Whip, the fourth highest ranking position in House leadership, on December 17, 2009. He represents the citizens of House District 54, which includes portions of Atlanta and Sandy Springs. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2004, and currently serves on the Rules, Appropriations, Education, Ethics, Industrial Relations, and Judiciary committees.
