Rep. Dollar Recognizes Cobb County Schools

ATLANTA – State Representative Matt Dollar (R-Marietta) today led the Georgia House of Representatives in recognizing the accomplishments of East Cobb County schools with a series of House Resolutions. These resolutions commend the outstanding academic achievement and improvement of schools in Rep. Dollar’s district, all of which were awarded with the highest honors given by Georgia’s Single Statewide Accountability System (SASS).

“I want to congratulate east Cobb County students and schools on their extraordinary academic success,” said Rep. Dollar. “These accomplishments are a testament to the hard work and dedication of teachers and school administrators in my district.”

SSAS was developed by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) to award schools based on their performance on state curriculum exams and Adequate Yearly Progress status. Under SASS and No Child Left Behind, Georgia schools are graded on their educational successes and have the opportunity to receive recognition based on the percentage of students meeting set standards. The standards are based on the Criterion Reference Competency Test (CRCT) for grades 1-8 and/or the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) for students in the 11th grade. Based on the results of these tests, schools can be named a platinum, gold, silver, or bronze school based on their level of improvement or high achievement.

The awards are announced as part of the K-12 Public Schools Report Card. The Report Card, which features the SSAS awards, provides bottom-line data for Georgia’s preschools, K-12 schools, colleges and universities, technical colleges, and educator licensing and accreditation. It includes school, system and state level reports organized into seven major sections: Accountability, Georgia Tests, National Tests, Indicators, Student and School Demographics, Personnel, and Comparisons.

For the 2010-2011 school years, 259 schools were awarded in Georgia for their high achievement on the CRCT or GHSGT, and 111 schools were awarded for their significant improvement on the tests.
