Rep. Dollar Recognizes Students for AP Success

ATLANTA – State Representative Matt Dollar (R-Marietta) today led the Georgia House of Representatives in recognizing the accomplishments of Charles Wang and Lisa Wang, with House Resolutions 2019 and 2020. The two unrelated Walton High School seniors are the Georgia recipients of the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement (AP), which awards scholarships to only two students in each state.

“It is an honor to recognize the accomplishments of these outstanding students,” said Rep. Dollar. “I am extraordinarily proud to say that both Georgia winners of this prestigious award were educated in Cobb County. This is a testament to the world-class education provided by the dedicated teachers and staff at Cobb County schools.”

Provided by the College Board and the Siemens Foundation, the $2,500 college scholarship is awarded to the male and female student in each state earning the greatest number of scores of 5 on the following AP Exams: Biology, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science AB, Environmental Science, Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, Physics C: Mechanics, and Statistics. Students must obtain a score of 5 on at least two of these exams to qualify. AP exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5.

Charles Wang and Lisa Wang, who are not related, have both taken AP courses since their freshman year of high school. To date, Charles has taken 14 AP courses and two organic chemistry courses at Georgia Tech. Lisa has taken 19 AP courses, in addition to serving as Walton High School’s student body president.

The Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement was established in 1988 as a partnership between Siemens and the College Board in an effort to inspire the nation’s next generation of mathematicians and scientists. In addition to the $2,500 scholarship for state winners, the program also awards a $5,000 scholarship to the top two national winners.
