ATLANTA – State Representative Keisha Waites (D-Atlanta) announced today that she is seeking vendors for the District 60 Regional Job Fair, which will take place on Friday, May 11, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The job fair will be held in southwest Atlanta at Atlanta Metropolitan College, located at 1630 Metropolitan Pkwy SW, Atlanta, Georgia.
“I recognize the importance of kick-starting employment in the region, and I want to make matching the right people to the right jobs easier,” said Rep. Waites.
The job fair, which will target everyone from seniors to blue-collar workers, is designed to connect the region’s most prosperous businesses and corporations with the most talented job candidates across House District 60, which includes areas of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, as well as the cities of Atlanta, Hapeville, Forest Park, East Point and College Park.
Even as the economy recovers, joblessness remains high. Georgia Department of Labor data shows the state unemployment rate hovers at 9.1 percent, with much higher rates in some minority communities. Still more workers are employed, but looking for better opportunities. Through the District 60 Regional Job Fair, Rep. Waites hopes to encourage networking and relationship-building that can help make a dent in unemployment. Rep. Waites also believes.
“This event will work to reduce crime and foreclosures in the region,” added Rep. Waites. “There is a direct relationship between unemployment rates and crime in our communities. Those communities that have the highest levels of poverty generally are also the locations where the most criminal activity occurs.”
