Georgia Legislators Head to South Carolina for First Savannah River Basin Joint-State Caucus Meeting

ATLANTA – Members of Georgia’s Savannah River Basin Legislative Caucus will travel together tomorrow to Columbia, South Carolina, where they will meet with their counterparts in the South Carolina state legislature. During this rare joint-state caucus meeting, state legislators from Georgia and South Carolina who represent districts along the Savannah River will meet to discuss issues pertaining to the Savannah River.

“One of our main goals is to form a group of bi-state legislators who can work together to get the Army Corps of Engineers to maintain more user friendly lake levels, so that our lakes don’t get so low,” said Georgia state Representative Barry Fleming (R-Harlem). “Both of our states depend on the Savannah River, so it makes sense for us to work together on these issues.”

The Georgia legislative caucus will meet at the Columbia County Courthouse in Evans, Georgia, tomorrow morning and then depart together for the South Carolina State Capitol.

In addition to meeting with South Carolina state legislators who represent districts along the Savannah River, Georgia’s Savannah River Basin Caucus will also be recognized by both the South Carolina state House of Representatives and state Senate. While at the South Carolina State Capitol, the Georgia legislators will also meet with South Carolina’s Republican and Democratic caucuses, highlighting the fact that the caucus is non-partisan and its mission to support the Savannah River affects people on both sides of the aisle.
