ATLANTA — State Representative Greg Morris (R-Vidalia) announced the passage of House Bills 702 and 772 by the Georgia House of Representatives. Both bills passed the House on Monday, March 3, otherwise known as Crossover Day which is the deadline in which a piece of legislation must pass at least one of the General Assembly’s two chambers.
“With attacks on our religious freedoms occurring every day, it is vital that our conservative values are protected in our state,” said Rep. Morris. “Some want to remove all references to God and faith from public life. I am committed to defending our values at the State Capitol.”
House Bill 702 calls for a monument of the 10 Commandments, as well as portions of The Declaration of Independence and the preamble to the Georgia Constitution to be erected on the state Capitol grounds. HB 702 passed the House by a vote of 138 to 37.
Under HB 772, the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services would be required to determine whether there is reasonable suspicion that an applicant is using drugs. This bill also requires that a photo ID be placed on all EBT cards that are used for food stamps in an effort to eliminate fraud. HB 772 passed by a vote of 107 to 66.
“My original bill mandated drug testing but the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that mandated drug testing is unconstitutional,” added Rep. Morris. “I strongly disagree with this ruling. So I will to work with the Senate on additional ideas to fight fraud, waste and abuse in our welfare system.”
Both bills will now be sent to the Senate for consideration.
