ATLANTA— House Bill 776, introduced by State Representative Alex Atwood (R-Brunswick), received final passage in the Georgia Senate on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, and it will now go to the Governor for consideration. Senate Bill 336, which was sponsored in the House by Rep. Atwood, received final passage in the House on Tuesday, March 18, 2004.
House Bill 776 amends authorizations for our Superior Court Clerks to receive data necessary to refine the master jury list. HB 776 seeks to assist in providing better protections from convicted felons potentially serving on a jury.
“I deeply appreciate the hard work of the Council of Superior Court Clerks in assisting with and promoting the passage of this necessary legislation,” said Rep. Atwood. “I also wish to thank the Judicial Council of Georgia for their support.”
Additionally, Represent Atwood carried Senate Bill 336 in the Georgia House of Representatives. SB 336 was authored by Senator William Ligon in response to numerous citizens’ complaints received from across Georgia as the result of excessive practices and fines received from the Georgia Board of Cosmetology. Some citizens engaged in cosmetology, whose businesses had previously been inspected for years with no infractions, had reported receiving first time citations in excess of over $1,000. If signed into law by Governor Deal, the Board will only be able to impose a maximum fine of $25 for the first offense, $75 for the second offense, and $300 for subsequent violations.
“I was very proud to assist Senator Ligon in helping to bring some rationality to what has apparently become an excessive bureaucratic overreach,” added Rep. Atwood.
