State Rep. Ben Harbin Appointed to the House Study Committee on Compensating Wrongfully Convicted Persons

ATLANTA— State Representative Ben Harbin (R-Evans) today commented on his recent appointment by Speaker Ralston to the House Study Committee on Compensating Wrongfully Convicted Persons.

“I am honored to be appointed to this study committee by Speaker Ralston and look forward to working with my colleagues to study ways in which other states handle cases of wrongly convicted persons,” said Rep. Harbin. “Being wrongly convicted of a crime will ruin a person’s life, and I believe that it is vitally important that we study this issue in depth so that we can learn how to properly handle these unfortunate situations in the future.”

The House Study Committee on Compensating Wrongfully Convicted Persons was created by HR 1332 during the 2014 legislative session. The committee will study the procedures used in other jurisdictions in the United States to ensure that any person wrongfully convicted in Georgia is compensated fully and fairly.

The study committee meetings will be called and scheduled by Chairman Carolyn Hugley (D-Columbus). Other members of this committee include: Representative Stephen Allison (R-Blairsville), Representative Rahn Mayo (D-Decatur), and Representative B.J. Pak (R-Lilburn).
