Medical Cannabis Study Committee to Hold First Meeting

ATLANTA – The Joint Study Committee on Prescription of Medical Cannabis for Serious Medical Conditions will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Georgia State Capitol.

Speakers on the meeting’s agenda include:

• Paige Figi, spokesperson and co-founder of the Realm of Caring Foundation, a Colorado based 501(c)(3) non-profit formed to aid in the research, education and advocacy for medicinal cannabis patients.

• Matt D. Cook, architect of Colorado’s medical marijuana laws, owner of national regulatory consulting business Cook Consulting LLC, and author of numerous publications pertaining to Colorado liquor law and cannabis regulation.

• James Bell, 25-year advocate for cannabis law reform and founder/director of the Georgia Campaign for Access Reform & Education (Georgia C.A.R.E.). Georgia C.A.R.E.’s mission is to educate the public on cannabis (marijuana /hemp) related issues and advocates for cannabis law reform, including cannabis therapeutics (medical marijuana).
The Joint Study Committee on Prescription of Medical Cannabis for Serious Medical Conditions is co-chaired by State Representative Allen Peake (R – Macon) and State Senator Renee Unterman (R – Buford). The joint study committee is tasked with studying the effects of the extracts and compounds of cannabis as a medical treatment to determine if it is appropriate to enact legislation that will allow for the prescription of medical cannabis. The Prescription of Medical Cannabis for Serious Medical Conditions Joint Study Committee was created by SR 981following the 2014 legislative session.
