Rep. Bill Hitchens Named Vice Chairman of Defense & Veterans Affairs Committee

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments named State Representative Bill Hitchens (R-Rincon) as the Vice Chairman of the Defense & Veterans Affairs Committee. Rep Hitchens will also serve as a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Public Safety and the Economic Development and Public Safety and Homeland Security committees.

“As a Marine Vietnam veteran, a retired commander in the Coast Guard Reserve, the first director of the Georgia Office of Homeland Security, and having served as the commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety for seven years, I sincerely appreciate Speaker Ralston and the Committee on Assignments for allowing me to have a voice in the areas that I have devoted my entire adult life,” said Rep. Hitchens. “Most citizens are aware that in today’s world national defense, homeland security and law enforcement are significant and often controversial issues plaguing our nation and our state, and I am eager to serve the citizens of this great state on these crucial committees. It is also important to me to recognize and assist our veterans; they stood tall when our country called, and we owe them a debt of gratitude.”

The House Committee on Assignments, chaired by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge), is charged with making all House committee assignments for the members of the Georgia House of Representatives.
