Rep. Waites pushes for Women and Minority Business Participation Plan

ATLANTA— State Representative Keisha Waites (D-Atlanta) recently introduced an amendment to House Bill 170, also known as the Transportation Funding Act of 2015. Rep. Waites’ amendment would ensure minority participation in Georgia’s transportation construction work.

“It is my belief that the state has a unique and historic opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to women and minority businesses,” said Rep. Waites. “It is simply in the best interest of all Georgians that House Bill 170 be amended to include provisions that guarantee the participation of women and minority businesses. We have many small and minority businesses ready to make a contribution, and they deserve the opportunity to participate in our state’s growth. Representatives Winfred Dukes and Calvin Smyre have championed minority inclusion in past and are, in fact, the inspiration for my attempt. At the very least, the state of Georgia should follow the federal government’s model to ensure the participation of women and minority owned businesses in state contracts.”

The Transportation Funding Act of 2015 is a comprehensive package of measures that addresses Georgia’s critical transportation infrastructure needs.
