Rep. Tanner’s Legislation Signed into Law by Governor Deal

Bill sponsor Rep. Kevin Tanner at the signing of HB 62 with Gov. Nathan Deal and Sen. Butch Miller

ATLANTA—State Representative Kevin Tanner (R–Dawsonville) commented today on Governor Nathan Deal signing into law House Bill 62, which allows for scholarship exemptions for special needs children of active duty military personnel in Georgia. Sponsored by Rep. Tanner, HB 62 unanimously passed the House of Representatives during the 2015 legislative session and was signed into law by Governor Deal on Wednesday, April 29, 2015.

“I want to thank my colleagues in the House for their support, Senator Butch Miller, who was the bill’s co-sponsor in the Senate, and Governor Deal for signing this important piece of legislation into law,” said Rep. Tanner. “HB 62 will allow the special needs children of Georgia’s active duty military to receive the same scholarship benefits as those of Georgia residents. This legislation will not only further their educational experience in our state, but also give some relief to the parents who are fighting for and serving Georgians every day.”

House Bill 62 waives the one-year residency qualification for children of actively serving military personnel stationed in Georgia for Georgia’s special needs scholarships. If a qualifying student’s parent is on active duty military service, and stationed in Georgia, the student would be considered a resident for the purposes of such scholarships.

Governor Deal signed HB 62 into law on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the Atlanta Press Club luncheon in Atlanta, Georgia.
