Rep. Bruce Williamson Comments on Success of ALEC Spring Conference

ATLANTA – State Representative Bruce Williamson (R- Monroe), Co-Chair of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) in Georgia, along with members of the Georgia General Assembly and state legislatures across the country, met in Savannah for the ALEC Spring Task Force Summit. The one-day conference is designed to bring together state legislators, business leaders, policy experts and citizen groups to discuss innovative state policy solutions from the perspective of limited government, free markets and federalism.

“The ALEC Spring Task Force Summit was a great opportunity for legislators to learn about the policies that shape the daily lives of people around the country,” said Rep. Williamson. “Members of the Georgia legislature, including myself, were able to connect with our peers in other state legislatures and learn from them. We also had the opportunity to share with them what’s working in Georgia and hear about successful policies in other states. This exchange of ideas is valuable to our policy discussions back home, and the practice of ideas sharing is one that should to be encouraged. Collaborative thinking is necessary when being involved with an organization such as ALEC. I can listen to different viewpoints and learn new thoughts and concepts about multiple issues, and more information helps me make a more informed decision.”

During the conference, attendees met with their subcommittees and task forces to share policy ideas and perspectives to learn about multiple issues facing the states, including management of wastewater projects, tax credits for workforce training, criminal justice reforms and wireless communications tower siting policies. In addition to the educational workshops and meetings, attendees also had the opportunity to a tour of the Port of Savannah to learn more about trade and commerce.

“The sheer volume of goods and services that flow from the port and how they affect, not just Georgians, but the entire country is incredible,” added Rep. Williamson. “The port tour was a great way to showcase the impact states have on trade.”

ALEC is America’s largest nonpartisan, voluntary membership organization comprised of nearly one-fourth of America’s state legislators. Members join to pursue continuing education and to share experiences with other business leaders, policy experts and different citizen organizations. All ALEC model policies, research and reports are posted online at www.alec.org, including conference agendas.
