ATLANTA—Representative Karen Bennett (D- Stone Mountain) addressed the 8th grade class of Stephenson Middle School during their Honors Program on May 19, 2015. This year’s program was the first formal “Commitment to Graduate” Ceremony, celebrating what will be the Class of 2019 and encouraging this class to make wise choices.
“I have always been an advocate for quality education, therefore I was happy to be a part of Stephenson Middle School’s first Graduation Commitment Ceremony and look forward to partnering with the school in future activities,” said Rep. Bennett. “This Commitment Ceremony is one way of showing students that education and a degree are important, and that it is up to them to achieve those things.”
In her speech, Rep. Bennett, paraphrased the popular book “Green Eggs and Ham,” By Dr. Seuss. Her message to the 8th graders focused on choices and urged students to always make the best choices.
“DeKalb is not just where I work—this is my community,” said Rep. Bennett. “Education needs to be a top priority, and that begins with these young people. We have to teach them that the choices they make now will impact their entire future, and that begins with a quality education.”
Representative Karen Bennett represents the citizens of Districts 94, which includes portions of DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2012, and currently serves on the Code Revision, Economic Development & Tourism, Health & Human Services, and Regulated Industries committees.
