ATLANTA – House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) recently appointed State Representative Amy Carter (R-Valdosta) to the House Study Committee on Postsecondary Education and Employment Options for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
“As a high school educator, I have seen the challenges that young Georgians with intellectual and developmental disabilities can face upon graduation,” said Rep. Carter. “By providing these students with increased and inclusive postsecondary opportunities, we will be able to give them the tools they need to grow and flourish. I look forward to studying this topic and working with Chairman Dempsey and my fellow committee members.”
This five member Study Committee, Chaired by State Representative Katie Dempsey (R-Rome) is established by House Resolution 642 and will study how to best create postsecondary educational opportunities for Georgians with disabilities and explore the creation and implementation of an “Employment First” policy which provides that employment should be the first and preferred option for all people, regardless of their disability.

Representative Amy Carter represents the citizens of District 175, which includes portions of Brooks, Lowndes, and Thomas counties. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2006 and is currently the Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government. She also serves on the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Education, Higher Education, Governmental Affairs, and the Small Business Development committees.
