Chambers’ Passes Legislation to Stop Pan Handlers on our Public Transportation System

Atlanta- During this past Tuesday’s legislative session, Representative Jill Chambers (R-Atlanta) addressed her fellow House Members on the Floor with Senate Bill 129, addressing two major problems facing our public transportation system today.

The problematic occurrences of solicitation of products and also the presence of pan handling individuals on our public transportation system are currently plaguing our state. Senate Bill 129 prohibits such acts on all public transit systems. The bill further states that persons in violation of this legislation will be guilty of a misdemeanor and fined accordingly. Its passage demonstrated strong bipartisan support, passing the House Floor without Floor amendments at a vote of 150-4.

Chambers stated that her objective is to make MARTA safer and more enjoyable. “This legislation will ensure our customers’ safety.”

In addition to her success in carrying the Senate bill on the House Floor, Chambers was also recently named “One of the Most Influential People in Georgia” by James Magazine in their March 15, 2005 edition.

Jill is also an active member of the Appropriations, Education and Public Safety Committees of the House.
