ATLANTA – State Representative Pam Dickerson (D-Conyers) was recently awarded the 2015 Community Champion Award by the Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC) – Atlanta for her work against cyberbullying during the 2015 legislative session.
“I am truly humbled to receive this award, and would like to thank the AAJC for such an honor,” said Rep. Dickerson. “My goal as a legislator is to promote equality and fairness for all individuals. To be recognized alongside men and women who have dedicated their lives towards advancing the same goals in their communities is an extraordinary compliment.”
Authored by Rep. Dickerson, House Bill 131, or the “End to Cyberbullying Act,” seeks to prosecute online offenses against children, and changes public school policies on bullying to include cyber-bullying. Under HB 131, bullying will be prohibited through the use of technological equipment that is the property of the local school system. HB 131 received final passage by the Georgia General Assembly on April 2, and was signed into law by Governor Deal on May 6, 2015.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Atlanta (formerly Asian American Legal Advocacy Center or AALAC) is the first non-profit law center dedicated to Asian immigrants and refugees in the Southeast. Rep. Dickerson will be honored for her work on HB 131 at the AAJC 5th Annual Community Champions Banquet in Atlanta on October 10. The Annual Community Champions Banquet recognizes the exceptional contributions that select individuals have made toward furthering the civil, social, and economic rights of Asian Americans in Georgia.
