Rep. Karen Bennett Receives Community Service Award

ATLANTA – State Representative Karen Bennett (D-Stone Mountain) was recently honored at New Bethel A.M.E. in Lithonia during the church’s 15th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major Award Celebration on January 18, 2016. During the service, Rep. Bennett was presented with the Drum Major for Justice Community Service Award for her work in the community.

“It is an honor to receive the Drum Major for Justice Community Service Award,” said Rep. Bennett. “I am blessed to be able to serve in a community where positive activism still makes a difference.”

Richard Allen Washington, Sr., Pastor of New Bethel presided over the celebration and former Georgia State Senator, Attorney Gary Parker, served as the keynote speaker. The theme for the event was “Standing for Righteousness.”  Other awards presented were the Drum Major Award, the Women of Courage Award and the Church Pillar of Strength Award. The special program, which was open to the community, ended with a reception for award recipients and program attendees.

Representative Karen Bennett represents the citizens of Districts 94, which includes portions of DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2012, and currently serves on the Code Revision, Economic Development & Tourism, and Regulated Industries committees.
