House Passes Rep. Glanton’s Legislation to Lower Homestead Tax Exemptions for the City of Jonesboro

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed House Bill 830, sponsored by State Representative Mike Glanton (D-Jonesboro), on Thursday, February 4, 2016.

“As requested by leaders in the City of Jonesboro through a resolution, this legislation affords the residents of Jonesboro to have their voices heard and to offer them the opportunity through a referendum on the November Ballot to determine for themselves whether to lower homestead exemptions in the city,” said Rep. Glanton.

HB 830 would provide a homestead exemption from the City of Jonesboro ad valorem taxes and restate the amount of the homestead exemption for the assessed value of the homestead for residents of the city. The bill lowers the homestead exemption by $10,000.00 increments from all City of Jonesboro ad valorem taxes for municipal purposes over a period of five years.

Should the bill receive passage in the Senate and the signature of the Governor, this measure would go before the voters of the City of Jonesboro for a vote in the November 2016 election.
