Rep. Sandra Scott’s Legislation on Tattoo Studio Warnings Passes House

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives recently passed House Bill 654, legislation sponsored by State Representative Sandra Scott (D-Rex), which would require tattoo studios to display warnings that certain tattoos could disqualify individuals from joining the military. HB 654 will now be considered by the Senate.

“This legislation by no means tells people that they cannot get tattoos, it is simply asking individuals to be aware before having tattoos put on their face, neck, or hands,” said Rep. Scott. “Young people under the age of 35, and especially teenagers, are getting tattoos all over their bodies. I am hopeful that this legislation will make them think about the future repercussions before making a permanent decision, as well as serving as a positive recruitment tool for our armed services.”

HB 654 would require tattoo studios to prominently display a sign for patrons to see immediately upon entering the studio warning them that they may be disqualified from joining the military if they get a tattoo on their face, neck, forearm, hand, wrist, lower leg. Those failing to comply will be served with a citation which will increase in value for subsequent violations and all fees will go to the local county boards of health.
