ATLANTA — The House Military Affairs Study Committee, chaired by State Representative Dave Belton (R-Buckhead), held its final meeting on Thursday, December 1, 2016, at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega, one of only six senior military colleges in the country and home to the Corps of Cadets.
“Over the past last several months, our committee has learned that military-friendly policies are imperative to protecting and strengthening Georgia’s military installations,” said Rep. Belton. “The University of North Georgia has trained a number of our country’s greatest heroes, boasting a long list of distinguished alumni, and it was only fitting that our committee concluded its tour of Georgia’s bases at this world-renowned institution. I am honored to have been a part of this study committee and look forward to continuing the committee’s work with meaningful legislation during the 2017 session.”
During this final meeting, House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) announced that a permanent House Military Affairs Working Group would be established during the upcoming 2017 legislative session to continue the study committee’s efforts in protecting Georgia’s military installations.
The 15 member study committee was established by House Resolution 1135 during the 2016 legislative session to examine best practices on how to protect Georgia’s military installations from a future federal base realignment and closure action. The committee has since traveled the state and visited eight different military bases, to discuss with local officials the conditions and needs associated with Georgia’s military installations.
Representative Dave Belton represents the citizens of District 112, which includes all of Morgan County and the eastern side of Newton County. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2014, and currently serves as a member of the Economic Development & Tourism, Education, and Interstate Cooperation committees.
