Rep. Demetrius Douglas Appointed to NCSL Health and Human Services Committee

ATLANTA – House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) recently appointed State Representative Demetrius Douglas (D-Stockbridge) to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Health and Human Services Committee. The Health and Human Services Committee is one of nine NCSL Standing Committees, which provides a forum for the discussion of major issues facing the states and allows legislators to learn from the experiences of other states.
“I am thankful to Speaker Ralston for naming me to this key NCSL committee,” said Rep. Douglas. “As a member of the House Health and Human Services Committee, I look forward to my service as a member of the National Conference of State Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee, which will allow me to further develop my knowledge and understanding of this increasingly important and critical policy area.”

According to NCSL, the Health and Human Services Committee is responsible for protecting states’ interests in federal decisions regarding Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Medicare, Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program. The committee is also concerned with Child Care Development Block Grant, early learning and pre-kindergarten, child welfare, child support, aging services and a host of other programs that provide critically important services. The committee also provides members an opportunity to share and learn from the experiences of other states in shaping health and human services policy and addressing key health and human services issues in the states.

The appointment is for a two-year term concurrent with Rep. Douglas’ service as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves legislators and staff from across the nation. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues in addition to advocating for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
