Education Legislation Co-Sponsored by Rep. Howard Passes House

ATLANTA – State Representative Henry “Wayne” Howard (D-Augusta) announced that the Georgia House of Representatives passed House Bill 740, legislation he co-sponsored, on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. The bill would require local school systems to conduct proper assessments prior to expelling or suspending students for five or more days.

“I am proud to co-sponsor House Bill 740, which overwhelmingly passed the House with bipartisan support,” said Rep. Howard. “These standards would apply to students in pre-K through third grade, making sure that our children receive the support they need during this crucial developmental period.”

HB 740 would prohibit schools from expelling or suspending students in public preschool through third grade for five or more days per school year without first providing the student with a multi-tiered system of supports, such as Response to Intervention (RTI), a preexisting program that identifies and addresses students’ academic and behavioral needs to help them succeed in the classroom.
