ATLANTA – State Representative Mike Glanton (D-Jonesboro) recently participated in the 2018 Center for the Advancement of Leadership Skills (CALS), the leadership development program of the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC) of The Council of State Governments. This annual program brings together state executive, legislative and judicial branch officials from the SLC’s 15 member states and allows them to engage in conversations in a strictly nonpartisan environment.
“I am honored and humbled to have been selected to participate in this prestigious Advance Leadership Program with other distinguished and accomplished leaders from through-out the Southeast,” said Rep. Glanton. “I believe the program is very beneficial and will help me to be a better legislator, leader and advocate for my constituents, community and state.”
CALS seeks to enhance core competencies that play a vital role in the service of state officials through focusing on four central components: communication, conflict resolution, consensus building and critical decision making. Ultimately, the program aims to provide the public with highly skilled, educated and confident state leaders.
The 2018 program convened October 13-17 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and at the nearby Winthrop Rockefeller Institute. The 2018 agenda included sessions on creating a culture of ethics, working for the public good, understanding group dynamics, leading across generations and communicating in person and on social media.
Participants also engaged in a roundtable discussion with author and presidential historian Richard Norton Smith about how our nation’s historical leaders can inform today’s government officials. Adam Schrager, author and investigative producer and reporter at WISC-TV in Madison, Wisconsin, delivered the final keynote address on the courage of taking a principled political stance.

Representative Mike Glanton represents the citizens of District 75, which includes portions of Clayton County. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2006 and was re-elected in 2012. He currently serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education and the Defense & Veterans Affairs, Education, MARTOC and Public Safety & Homeland Security committees.
