Rep. Bill Hitchens Named Chairman of House Public Safety & Homeland Security Committee

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments named State Representative Bill Hitchens (R-Rincon) as the Chairman of the House Public Safety & Homeland Security Committee.  Rep. Hitchens will also serve as a member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation and on the Defense & Veterans Affairs, Transportation and the Economic Development & Tourism committees.

“I certainly appreciate Speaker Ralston and the Committee on Assignments having the confidence in my abilities to select me to lead this very important committee,” said Rep. Hitchens. “Prior to being elected to the Legislature, I served 43 years in Georgia State Government in several public safety related agencies.  I was the first director of the Georgia Office of Homeland Security, and then I served almost seven years as the commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety.  I sincerely believe my background and experience will be valued assets as I take on this new challenge. I firmly believe the primary purpose of government is the protection of its citizens, and it is my intent to continue my life’s work to make Georgia as safe and secure as possible.”

The House Committee on Assignments, chaired by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge), is charged with making all House committee assignments for the members of the Georgia House of Representatives.
