Representative Geisinger Wants to Remove Ad Valorem and Sales Tax on All Motor Vehicles

ATLANTA— Today Representative Harry Geisinger (R-Roswell) introduced legislation giving Georgians a new reason to celebrate birthdays.

“Two of the most hated taxes in Georgia are the sales tax and the ‘Birthday Tax’ or ad valorem tax on cars,” said Rep. Geisinger. “This legislation is a smart change for Georgia tax payers.”

House Bill 480 removes all ad valorem and sales taxes from vehicles purchased in Georgia. Not only does this bill release auto owners from two unpopular taxes, it simplifies the way fees are assessed. This legislation would impose a one-time seven percent title fee on all vehicles based upon the value of the automobile being purchased, with a maximum fee of $1,500.

Many people have taken advantage of the legal loopholes in the state’s tax system and have avoided paying sales tax on vehicles based upon “legal games” that presently exist in law. This bill will place a fair fee on all new cars and car owners will no longer have to pay sales tax and annual motor vehicle ad valorem taxes.

The goal of this bill is to be revenue-neutral with bi-partisan support. Removing the sales tax and the dreaded “Birthday Tax” on cars bought in Georgia will make automobiles more affordable for all Georgians. This will rejuvenate the auto industry in Georgia, and help boost the state’s economy and help the vast majority of Georgia citizens in these difficult economic times.
