Representative Glenn Baker Votes to Approve First GDOT Director of Planning

ATLANTA – Recently state Representative Glenn Baker (D- Jonesboro) was appointed to serve on the House Transportation Subcommittee on Approval of the Director of Planning by House Transportation Committee Chairman Jay Roberts (R- Ocilla). This subcommittee was organized to review Governor Sonny Perdue’s recent appointment, Mr. Todd Long, for the position of Director of Planning at the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and make a recommendation to the full House Transportation Committee.

“I was honored Chairman Jay Roberts asked me to be part of this historic committee,” said Representative Glenn Baker. “The Director of Planning will have a vital role in determining transportation projects in Clayton and Henry Counties as well as the rest of the state. As the only freshman asked to sit on this subcommittee, I took the appointment very seriously and am happy to say that Todd Long seems more than prepared for the job.”
On Tuesday of this week the House Transportation Subcommittee on Approval of the Director of Planning met and unanimously voted to recommend Todd Long for the position of Director of Planning at GDOT for approval to the full House Transportation Committee. The subcommittee marks a historic note as it is rare in Georgia history that a standing committee of the House of Representatives will convene to approve a gubernatorial appointee.
The House Transportation Committee is required by Senate Bill 200, which Governor Perdue signed into law May 11, 2009 to approve any personnel named to the Director of Planning position at GDOT.
The full House Transportation Committee is tentatively scheduled to begin approval hearings for the Director of Planning position in late August. More information regarding a specific meeting time and place will follow.
