Steve Davis to Confer on Insurance Reforms at National Meeting of Regulators

Health Insurance Changes to be Discussed; Shoring up Financial Markets a Priority

ATLANTA – Representative Steve Davis (R-McDonough) will join other state lawmakers in the nation’s capital this week at a meeting of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) to consult with state and federal regulators about insurance industry issues affecting consumers in the Peach State. Major issues expected to be addressed include sweeping changes in the national healthcare system and shoring up the nation’s financial system.

The NAIC will welcome Representative Davis as part of its annual national meeting to discuss a broad range of public policies impacting insurance consumers. Representative Davis has been carefully following proposals crafted by the NAIC regarding health insurance rates. He also plans to discuss efforts to continue strengthening the proven solvency system for insurers.
“Far-reaching reforms coming from Washington could have a profound impact on Georgia insurance consumers,” said Representative Davis. “It is critical that we work with state and federal insurance regulators to protect safeguards for policyholders.”
Representative Davis and other visiting legislators will also be given a briefing from Vice President Joe Biden on the hotly contested Health Care Reform proposal.
“I am excited for the opportunity to hear the Vice President; however, I simply do not believe a federal mandate is the solution. This proposed reform would create 53 new federal authorities and commissions which will serve as a bureaucratic maze that will destroy the private industry as well as the efficient delivery of all health care. Furthermore it will drive up the costs,” explained Representative Davis.
Among the other federal reforms the NAIC is evaluating are the proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency, the Office of National Insurance and systemic regulation of the financial sector.
The NAIC is a voluntary organization of the chief insurance regulatory officials of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. The NAIC serves the needs of consumers and the industry, with an overriding objective of supporting state insurance regulators as they protect consumers and maintain the financial stability of the insurance marketplace.
