Rep. Spencer Announces Funding for Altamaha Tech Camden Campus

ATLANTA – State Representative Jason Spencer (R-Woodbine) announced today that the fiscal year 2014 state budget will include $1 million for repairs, renovations and equipment at the Altamaha Technical College (ATC) campus in Camden County. These funds will allow ATC to expand its courses offered at its Kingsland campus.

“I would like to thank Governor Nathan Deal for leading the way on this issue and being extremely supportive of our need in Camden County,” said Rep. Spencer. “The effort to put the funding in the budget this year was a team effort made by many in the Camden County community. Everyone worked very hard to make this happen.”

The budget, which covers the next fiscal year beginning July 1, will include funding for the satellite campus in Camden County. Currently, Altamaha Technical College is holding classes at the College of Coastal Georgia in Kingsland, and these additional funds in the budget will allow ATC to utilize more space at this satellite campus.

This arrangement will allow ATC to expand their technical programs to address immediate local workforce development needs and increase the number of enrollees in the school’s technical programs.

“This approach will save tax payers money on the utilization of the current building in Camden and increase ATC’s footprint so we can start developing the local workforce to attract necessary industry much sooner instead of starting from scratch. We now can get started sooner on developing our workforce needs. This is very positive news for our community,” added Rep. Spencer.

Expanding ATC’s presence in the current facility is congruent with the state’s policy to put more emphasis on technical training and develop our region’s workforce.

“According to Commissioner Ron Jackson with the Technical College System of Georgia and Chancellor Hank Huckaby, they will be analyzing the situation in Camden County in order to develop the future needs for technical training and the traditional services already provided by the University System at the College of Coastal Georgia. Currently, there are about 50 acres available to the College of Coastal Georgia’s Camden Campus for further expansion for both Altamaha Tech and the College of Coastal Georgia. With regards to the existing property that was donated to the State Properties Commission off Exit 7 on I-95 in anticipation for a newly constructed technical college, a process to evaluate the future use of that property will be part of the analysis between the Technical College System of Georgia and the University System,” added Rep. Spencer.

Altamaha Technical College is located in Jesup, with satellite campuses in Baxley, Hazlehurst, Kingsland, and Brunswick. Altamaha Tech provides postsecondary education programs in fields ranging from business technology and industrial technology to health sciences and personal services. The school’s mission is to meet the future economic challenges of southeast Georgia. Altamaha Tech is part of the Technical College System of Georgia, which is administered by the Technical College System of Georgia.
