Rep. Beverly Touts Work of Georgia House Democratic Caucus’ Subcommittee on COVID-19, Condemns Spread of Misinformation

ATLANTA – State Representative James Beverly (D-Macon), chair of the Georgia House Democratic Caucus (GHDC), recently touted the work of the GHDC’s Subcommittee on COVID-19 and condemned reports of misinformation related to COVID-19.

“The title of Bob Woodward’s new book, ‘Rage,’ may define the overall feeling of the American public after learning about 18 taped interviews of President Donald Trump. Trump admitted he knew the coronavirus was dangerous, deadly, airborne and highly contagious weeks before the first coronavirus death was recorded in the United States. Trump went on to say that he ‘played it down’ to stop a panic, and I condemn President Trump’s concealment of the truth about this deadly virus and his attempt to ‘play it down,’” said Rep. Beverly. “The American people must trust the information coming from its federal, state and local governments on COVID-19. Why did the President keep lifesaving information from the American people? The United States has more than 195,000 coronavirus deaths and more than 6.5 million cases of coronavirus. The state of Georgia has more than 6,128 casualties, with more than 287,000 confirmed cases. How many people would be alive today if Trump had not concealed the truth?”

The House Democratic Caucus Chair James Beverly previously formed a subcommittee to provide data and information on the coronavirus to the public. The subcommittee provided bi-weekly updates about the coronavirus positive test data on adults, children and the elderly in Georgia during their broadcasts on Facebook Live.

Over four months, the subcommittee published several documents on issues involving COVID-19 due to complaints about the manipulation of data by the Department of Public Health, as well as complaints against the Department of Labor for failing to resolve problems related to the Unemployment Insurance Claims.

The GHDC COVID-19 subcommittee members include Chairman Beverly, as well as State Representatives Debra Bazemore (D-South Fulton), Roger Bruce (D-Atlanta), Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale), Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain), Shelly Hutchinson (D-Snellville), Donna McLeod (D-Lawrenceville), Mary Robichaux (D-Roswell), Sandra Scott (D-Rex), Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) and Erica Thomas (D-Austell).

Representative James Beverly represents the citizens of District 143, which includes portions of Bibb County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2011 and currently serves as House Minority Caucus Chairman. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation and on the Ethics, Health & Human Services, Retirement, Rules, Small Business Development and Special Rules committees.
