Rep. Karen Bennett Issues Statement on U.S. Senator Kamala Harris as Running Mate to Democratic Presidential Nominee Vice President Joe Biden

ATLANTA – State Representative Karen Bennett (D-Stone Mountain), chair of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC), today issued the following statement on U.S. Senator Kamala Harris being selected as the running mate to Democratic Presidential Nominee Vice President Joe Biden:

“As an African American woman, alum of Howard University, sister of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and an elected official, I am beyond excited and proud that U.S. Senator Kamala Harris was selected as the vice-presidential nominee for the Democratic presidential ticket.

“Senator Harris possesses all the attributes required to become an excellent vice president. She has consistently displayed her intelligence, temerity, political acumen and love for people at the highest levels of government. She will stand up for and, undoubtedly, work tirelessly to help restore our democracy.

“Her story is quintessentially American – the child of immigrant parents who sought a better life in a new country. She did not take the easy road, but the one that most prepared her for this moment. Beginning as the district attorney for San Francisco, Senator Harris eventually became the attorney general of California and then a member of the United States Senate. Now, she is on the verge of becoming vice president of the United States.

“Young girls of color will see her and realize they too can achieve the highest level of public service. Graduates of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) will acknowledge how attending a HBCU prepared Senator Harris for the rigors of life. Sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will speak of her learning the merits of sisterhood and excellence as an esteemed member of our organization. I will see her as an ally and advocate for the people of Georgia.”

Representative Karen Bennett represents the citizens of Districts 94, which includes portions of DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2012 and currently serves on the Code Revision, Economic Development & Tourism, Health & Human Services and Regulated Industries committees.
